• About ten per cent of sexually active young people under 24 in North Essex have Chlamydia. In this area there are about 19,650 females and 20,240 males. Total number of 15-24 year olds =39,890. Without local screening potentially over 4,000 young people who are sexually active would remain undetected so that’s 1 in 10!
• Every year over 40,000 teenage girls become pregnant in the UK. The number of under 18’s getting pregnant in North East Essex is below the national average of 41 girls aged between 15-17 per 1,000. But unfortunately our figures are still too high. In Tendring conception rates were 40.5 per 1,000 girls during 2005 to 2007 and in Colchester it was 36.
• NHS North East Essex spends £1.5 million a year treating sexually transmitted infections and £700,000 on HIV treatment and support. The number of people receiving HIV treatment in Essex in 2007 was 1,056.
• Most young people are not sexually active. 70% have not had sex before the legal age of 16. But even if someone is not sexually active they still need to know about sexually transmitted infections so that they can protect themselves and their friends from an unwanted pregnancy or infection.
